
History...
This breed has its origins in Italy where it was originally bred as a gladiator and as a guardian. In ancient Rome dogs were bred to serve the great Roman armies. Throughout history these dogs were sought after for their great strength and size and were often used as fighting dogs.
The breed almost died out but in the late 1940's Pierro Scanziani saw and was overwhelmed by these dogs and dedicated much of his life to the preservation of the breed. Hence we have the modern Neapolitan as seen today.
They are heavy boned and thickset with a huge broad head. The most distinguishing feature of the Neapolitan is its loose skin which forms numerous folds on the head and neck.
Characteristics...
Despite their size, the Neapolitan is calm and placid by nature, however they are strong willed and will not respond to harsh treatment. They will learn and respect through good training and a stern voice. They can be described as loyal, intelligent, gentle and protective. Neapolitans are best suited to life as a companion. They are great with children but are not a childs dog.

the average life expectancy is 7 - 10 years.
Size - weight...
Neapolitan Mastiffs are one of the largest breeds with males weighing around 80kgs and standing 65-75 cms at the withers, bitches will be proportionately smaller.
Coat...
The Neapolitan has a short coat so grooming requirements aren't excessive.
Colours...
Grey is the predominant colour but they also come in black, tawny and mahogany, all colours may be brindled. White is accepted on the chest and toes.
Summary...
Neapolitans are not for the faint hearted. If you ever wanted a dog in your life you will certainly know you have one if you choose this breed. A large backyard is not necessary but it would be a good idea to allow them to eat and drink outside as they do drool. Once again they are not a childs dog but are fine with families as long as the adults are in charge. They are mature minded, not 100% obedient and demand you get fully involved.
